My Favorite Non-Fiction of 2021

This is a short list but these are just such standouts that I really couldn’t bring myself to add more.

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

It took me a while to read this because the subject matter was so tender. Zauner’s memoir is about her mother’s illness and death. The writing was intense and raw and I loved how she incorporated food and music into this reflection.

How the Word is Passed by Clint Smith

How do we tell our history? What do we remember? What stories get told? All these questions and more are explored in this book. I’m not surprised this was on Obama’s book list.

Somebody’s Daughter by Ashley C. Ford

Ford’s memoir, mostly about her imprisoned father, was a book I connected with more than I expected. It’s about so much more than a tag line could even do justice for.
