New Releases – February 2023

A look at some of the books coming out in February 2023. Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for the eARCs in exchange for an honest review.

The One that Got Away by Charlotte Rixon

Out Feb. 2, 2023, St. Martin’s Press

It’s not a love story, it’s a story about first love.

I almost DNF’d this but then something hooked me and I couldn’t put it down. Told in alternate timelines, the story is about Benjamin and Clara. They had an intense, passionate connection in university, but tragedy tore them apart. It also brings them together years later.

Readers who enjoyed “The Girl He Used to Know” and “Normal People” will probably connect with this book as well. It was compelling and gripping. I gasped at parts; it felt more like a thriller or mystery at times. The characters were so realistic and gritty, full of texture and growth. It’s a heavy read.

I wasn’t left with fuzzy feelings reading this, but its execution was masterful. What an emotional journey of heartbreak, loss, and redemption.

I will say that the title does not fit this book at all. It’s so unimaginative and not even accurate to the theme of the book.

For Twice in My Life by Annette Christie

Out Feb. 7, 2023, Little Brown and Company

I really liked this book and could not put it down! I think it was mainly because of the Main Character, Layla. She was flawed and relatable and interesting. I really identified with her. I loved the setting of Seattle (made me miss living there so much).

The premise is interesting – if you want something like While You Were Sleeping but WAY less creepy, this is the book for you. It’s also a closed door romance (no sex on page).

However, there was a big downside that could trip up some readers. Most of this stems from the fact that this is a love triangle, something I have nothing against in theory, but in practice means that we don’t get enough time with either love interest. Both brothers were so great in their own way, and I liked them both.

Miss Newbury’s List by Megan Walker

Out February 7, 2023, Shadow Mountain Publishing

An adorable read! Rosalind is engaged to be married to a duke, but she has a bucket list to do first. Luckily, she has her best friend and her handsome cousin to help her on her adventures.

This regency romance fits solidly in the comfort romance category. It’s got enough angst to keep the plot moving, but it’s not to tense that you’ll get really stressed out. There’s more turmoil and conflict than a lot of proper romances I’ve read.

There were a lot of silly parts where the characters really acted like teens or young adults. I enjoyed these parts because I love seeing characters have moments of real joy and connection.

Never Seduce a Duke by Vivienne Lorret

Out February 21, 2023 by Avon.

Avon is an imprint of Harper Collins. Until the Harper Collins Union signs a fair contract, I will be withholding my review.

Other books I’m looking forward to:

Radiant Sin by Katee Robert. (Out Feb. 7) Look, I know these books can be cringe but I’m hooked. They’re steamy and… well, ok, they’re just steamy.

Big Swiss by Jen Beagin (Out Feb. 7) A transcriptionist for a sex therapist falls in love with a client. If it’s as quirky and sexy as the marketing is making it seem, I think I’m going to love it.

Isha, Unscripted by Sajni Patel. (Out Feb. 14) I’ve loved Patel’s other work. It’s punchy and addictive. The Matthew McConaughey chasing aspect of the story has me a bit worried but I’m willing to try it out.

The Windeby Puzzle by Lois Lowry. (Out Feb 14). Of course I love Lowry from her Giver series, which were defining books for my childhood. But now this historical fiction inspired by a bog body? (Another niche interest of mine) Sign me up! Plan to read this with my son.
