My Favorite YouTube Video Essays

One of my most recent coping mechanisms is watching a YouTube video essay while bullet journaling. I’m sharing some of my favorites with you today! The YouTube video essay is really a format of our time and honestly just a lot of fun. Here are some of my recent favorites.

TWIST VILLIANS

The way this creator looks at villains’ is fascinating. This is a deep dive into the craft of storytelling and plot building, all with Disney and Pixar movies as examples.

CORSETS

You know those straight-lacing scenes popular in historical fiction? They’re stupid. Corsets are terribly misunderstood. Bernadette Banner is a long-time favorite of mine. She’s a researcher and seamstress of historical clothing.

WHY THE PERCY JACKSON MOVIES ARE SO BAD

I’m reading the Percy Jackson books for the first time and wondered if the film adaptations were really so bad. I get annoyed when book fans just compare for book to movie accuracy and don’t go deep when analyzing an adaptation. This video does a bit of that, but it also gets into to the more complex reason these were a flop.

ENNEAGRAM

I love studying the enneagram mostly for writing and character study. This creator is doing videos for each type, using fictional characters. Types 1-3 are out now; the best place to start is with the overview.

MANLY MEN

Part of what I love about historical costuming is seeing how trends come and go over time and beauty and art is subjective. What we perceive as masculine and feminine also changes. This video will probably also make you laugh.
